International Keynote: Building bridges of transformation: A journey of diversity, inclusion and cultural diplomacy in music therapy - Dr Indra Selvarajah
Abstract Overview
In this keynote, we will embark on a profound exploration of diversity, equity, and inclusion through the lens of a music therapist and academician whose career has been a tapestry of cultural diplomacy and systemic transformation. Drawing from a personal journey that spans Malaysia, the UK, the USA, and now Singapore, the speaker offers a narrative of how diverse cultural and professional experiences have intersected to forge a path in music therapy that champions belonging and equity.
This address delves into the ways music therapists can challenge and reshape deficit-oriented and pathologizing responses to human differences. The speaker's unique trajectory—ranging from rigorous training in music therapy and psychology to innovative academic contributions and community-focused initiatives—serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of music therapy in embracing minority voices and celebrating cultural diversity within the profession. We will explore how the speaker's experiences—from studying at prestigious institutions to working in underprivileged and poorly resourced environments—have influenced her approach to music therapy, highlighting the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering respect and understanding among therapists from varied backgrounds.
The speech will spotlight the impactful work done in partnership with countless allies in the field to advance the mission and vision of the World Federation of Music Therapy, prioritizing education and advocacy by developing innovative educational opportunities, raising awareness of music therapy globally, and educating unreached populations about its benefits, including in crisis situations. Drawing on personal anecdotes and professional insights, the speaker will reflect on the disruptive actions necessary to create inclusive spaces within music therapy and offer strategies for fostering just futures amid oppressive global systems. By weaving together the threads of diverse experiences, the speaker will illustrate how music therapy can transcend traditional boundaries and act as a catalyst for meaningful change.
Join us for an inspiring journey that not only celebrates the rich tapestry of cultural intersections but also calls for collective action in advancing diversity, equity, and accessibility within music therapy. This keynote aims to ignite discussion, provoke thought, and mobilize leaders and innovators to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in our shared quest for a more inclusive and just profession.
