From disengagement to connection: Schizophrenia and music therapy

Abstract Overview

This presentation concerns a music therapy program at an extended care psychiatric ward in Australia, with consumers who are adults diagnosed within the schizophrenia spectrum. The presentation will discuss symptoms, prevalence, and treatments of schizophrenia, based on evidence from current literature. It is informed by a recovery-oriented philosophy and the CHIME conceptual framework. (Damsgaard & Jensen, 2021) This framework aims to address consumer need, and enhance quality of life in a minimally equipped setting with limited psychosocial intervention. The music therapy program described was designed to embrace diversity and creativity. Outcomes highlight the music therapy program's positive impact and emphasise the need to address broader systemic issues for holistic well-being and the importance of clinician self-care. All confidential details have been omitted.
