Better together: Speech therapy and music therapy collaboration

Abstract Overview

This presentation outlines the journey of integrating speech therapy within a music therapy clinic. In our clinic, we have developed a collaborative approach, bringing together distinct therapeutic techniques and fostering a rich interdisciplinary environment. Working together, speech therapists and music therapists developed innovative interventions tailored to individual client needs. Speech therapists traditionally address goals such as speech articulation and language comprehension. By learning from the team of music therapists, the speech therapists utilised musical elements such as rhythm and melody to enhance their intervention. For example, rhythmic cueing was employed to improve speech pacing, while lyric completion was used to encourage early words and speech sound attempts. This has proven to be a highly beneficial experience for both therapists and clients.
Furthermore the presentation will detail how the speech and music therapy partnership has also enhanced professional growth and learning. Speech therapists gained insights into the cognitive and relational aspects of therapy through music and strategies to support positive functional outcomes with clients. Conversely, music therapists expanded their understanding of speech therapy approaches, enabling them to apply their musical expertise more effectively using language-rich strategies and supporting use of communication tools in therapeutic contexts.
Client examples of integrated intervention approaches will be provided, and the benefits described, such as improvements in communication skills and higher levels of engagement during sessions. This collaborative approach not only advanced therapeutic outcomes but also enriched the therapeutic experience, demonstrating the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical practice.
In summary, the experience of speech therapists and music therapists working together highlights the positive impact of interdisciplinary practice to create a more effective therapeutic approach. This interdisciplinary approach aligns with contemporary practices that emphasize holistic and person-centered care. Future research could investigate and quantify the effectiveness of the integration of speech and music therapy in clinical settings.
