A creative music therapy journey to inspire traumatised children: Using music therapy techniques to integrate music into their care routines, promoting relaxation, comfort, emotional well-being and improve quality of life.
Abstract Overview
There is a call for music therapy for orphaned children in both orphanages and hospitals. Music is a powerful tool and is listened to and played by people of all cultures. Orphaned children are victims of trauma, often due to being neglected. Orphanages and hospitals in a country like Thailand, are overflowing with orphaned children. As a Thai adoptee and through my music therapy experience in Thailand, it saddens me to see the critical needs of these children. I had the opportunity to travel back home recently to provide music therapy workshops for nurses, students and staff in orphanages; lectures and providing music therapy to children. I have fundraised money to supply musical instruments to the orphanage I came from in Thailand and to the local hospital. In the orphanage, I showed the children a variety of percussion instruments and demonstrated how to use them. This brought a lot of smiles, laughter and happiness. One child in the hospital had never seen an egg shaker. Great delight visibly came across his face as he shook it faster and faster with immense excitement. Studies on children in orphanages from different countries have shown improvement on emotional well-being after utilising music therapy interventions. Other studies for orphaned children in hospitals have shown the benefits of music including the reduction in heart rate, and the promotion of relaxation and care routines.
Medication and psychological care is costly and music therapy can offer a less expensive adjunct to treatment. Using music therapy techniques in both the therapeutic environment (supported with trained professional music therapists) and non-therapeutic environment can successfully integrate music into a child's care routine to support communication, promote relaxation, comfort, and emotional well-being. Orphaned children need critical support to ensure they receive specialised care, education and maintain good health. Learning their language after being separated from one or both parents can be difficult in early childhood. However, music is its own language. Music provides an impactful mode of communication when there are language barriers that allow children to connect with others. Music is shown to be a useful coping mechanism for dysregulated emotions. Changes in sound and listening to songs can convey intensity and power of an emotion.
Registered Music Therapists can help support both a therapeutic relationship and a safe space, allowing for the processing of emotions and experiences. Music is crucial for each of the developmental stages of early childhood.
