Enhancing therapeutic engagement and outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder through sensory regulation activities in music therapy sessions.

Abstract Overview

This presentation delves into incorporating sensory regulation activities in music therapy sessions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sensory regulation activities play a crucial role in helping children attain a state of calm and preparedness, thereby bolstering their capacity to engage effectively in therapeutic activities. The presentation discusses various sensory regulation techniques utilised in music therapy sessions, encompassing vestibular, tactile, auditory, and proprioceptive inputs.

Incorporating sensory regulation activities into music therapy has shown promising results in improving participants' ability to sustain joint attention, reduce impulsivity, and enhance overall emotional regulation. Case studies of children with ASD highlight significant improvements in their capacity to engage in structured musical activities, follow instructions, and exhibit collaborative play (Pfeiffer et al., 2011; Watling & Hauer, 2015).

Research supports these findings, indicating that sensory-based interventions can enhance engagement and reduce anxiety in children with ASD (Pfeiffer et al., 2011; Watling & Hauer, 2015). Studies have demonstrated that integrating multisensory approaches in therapeutic settings improves sensory processing and behavioural outcomes (Baranek, 2002; Schaaf et al., 2014). Music therapy integrates sensory regulation activities and promotes social interaction and communication skills (Geretsegger et al., 2014; LaGasse, 2014).

Music therapists are crucial in creating adaptive and responsive therapeutic environments that meet the sensory needs of children with ASD. By incorporating sensory regulation activities into music therapy, therapists can improve therapeutic outcomes and enhance the quality of life for children with ASD. This presentation aims to offer insights and practical strategies for music therapists and other professionals working with this population, emphasising the potential of sensory regulation activities to enhance the effectiveness of music therapy.
