The vibroacoustic pillow: Increasing access to vibroacoustic therapy in music therapy

Abstract Overview

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) draws upon intentional uses of sound waves, specifically pulses and low frequency sounds to support individuals’ physiological and psychological well-being (Skille, 1989; Campbell, Burger and Ala-Ruona, 2018). VAT, devised by Olav Skille in the 1960s, has been used in sound healing, music and medicine, allied health, and psychology settings. More recently there has been a growth in using VAT within Music Therapy (MT), particularly around supporting individuals’ motor function, muscle tone and pain management (Rüütel, 2002; Kantor, Campbell, Kantorová, et al., 2022). While research demonstrates the use of VAT in clinical settings using prefabricated Vibroacoustic pillows, chairs and tables, further inquiry is needed to make VAT more accessible and inclusive in diverse MT sessions.

This presentation explores the development of an accessible Vibroacoustic Pillow (VAP) used to support the reduction of MT participant’s anxiety and hyperactivity, and provide positive sensory enrichment. The target population of study within this presentation includes children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety and emotional dysregulation. The VAP was developed by testing Bluetooth speakers and pillows against a criteria that considered speaker volume and bass frequency output, pillow comfort, ease of use, cost and safety. Appropriate musical playlists were also developed and curated by music therapists. These playlists have been made freely accessible online. While the VAP has primarily been used in MT sessions (facilitated by a music therapist), caregivers have also been, and continue to be, educated around the benefits of using the VAP to support participants outside MT sessions (such as in the home).

Evidence supporting the success of the VAP includes in-session observations made by a music therapist, verbal feedback from families during sessions, and written feedback from families in response to the ‘Vibroacoustic Pillow Survey’. Overall results yielded positive outcomes for reduced hyperactivity, increased sleep, emotional management and wellbeing. Moreover, in-session observations highlighted the benefits of therapist-facilitated VAP experiences in strengthening therapeutic relationships and providing MT participants with safety and agency.

These findings highlight the potential benefits of the VAP, and the need for more accessible VA resources within MT settings, and the home. Implications for further uses of the VAP and potential areas for future research are also discussed.
