The role of AI technology in the recovery of a deceased family’s musical legacy

Abstract Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are advancing rapidly in various areas, sparking ongoing legal and ethical debates. One contentious area is AI technology that can imitate and replace unique traits, such as voice and face. AI Voice Conversion, or AI Voice Changer, is a tool where AI identifies patterns in a voice input and learns to create an audio output in the studied voice. This technology is seen as risky due to potential misuse and the possibility of confusing people. However, its use is not forbidden and may be applicable in therapeutic contexts.
This presentation will share a positive case study of a participant who discontinued music therapy due to changed circumstances. The participant was a woman in her 60s with early-onset dementia, depression, anxiety, and Korsakoff syndrome. She was referred to the music therapy service to achieve well-being goals.
She frequently reminisced about her deceased husband, who was a musician, and expressed grief over not having any recordings of his singing. The facilitator reached out to his past band members and obtained copies of his music works. The participant showed positive responsiveness and minimal adverse reactions during the sessions.
The participant recalled helping her husband as a co-lyricist and expressed a willingness to engage in songwriting to recover his musical works and reminisce about his legacy. Sufficient data for AI’s deep learning was retrieved from the limited recordings and produced output audio, although the final step did not occur due to the termination of the service.
This presentation will share the tools, process and experience from this case and discuss the potential therapeutic use of AI in similar contexts. The focus will be on creativity and diversity in therapeutic practices, highlighting how innovative technologies can support diverse client needs and enhance therapeutic outcomes.
