Creative journeys through expressive arts: Integrating music, drawing, and poetry in music therapy practice

Abstract Overview

This workshop invites music therapists to explore the profound potential of incorporating expressive arts—music, drawing, and poetry—into their clinical practice. In fostering creative personal journeys, this experiential workshop will guide participants through approaches informed by Helen Bonny’s Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and two of its modifications: Lisa Summer’s Repeated Listening and Margareta Wärja’s KMR (Brief Music Journeys). These innovative models, rooted in depth psychology, view music as a co-therapist that the listener embodies.

Participants will engage in practical exercises designed to enhance their internal resources and expand their therapeutic toolkit. The workshop will include hands-on activities, reflective practice, and opportunities for discussion. By integrating these techniques, music therapists can enrich and diversify their practice, by facilitating clients' self-discovery and emotional healing through creative expression. The session will conclude with a Q&A segment, allowing for further reflection and exploration of the concepts presented.
