Joined-Up Practice: noticing and building on a network of creative spaces for diverse community members within a regional music therapy context.
Abstract Overview
We conceptualise 'joined-up practice’ as a holistic approach that recognises preexisting networks and engages with them to provide creative spaces and myriad diverse ways for individuals to flourish. Creativity is celebrated through supporting client's own individual expression; providing creative spaces at a dedicated therapy studio and within local community organisations; and innovatively utilizing the available networks to provide diverse opportunities that honour individuals’ unique strengths and abilities, supporting them to thrive.
Drawing on the diversity of skills, training and life experience of our team members, a ‘joined-up’ approach acknowledges and utilizes the networks that each member interacts with to enrich the overall organisation and further diversify pathways for our clients to access creative spaces. This approach embraces the blurred lines of a regional context, drawing on team members’ position within the community and the various networks with which they engage to provide a broad knowledge of participants and their contexts. This deep understanding of clients’ context as well as of the broader community captures more than an intake form and informs our practice to better meet the clients’ needs.
Through deep consideration as a team of the unique culture of our work environment and how our organisation fits within the broader community context, it is hoped that we can provide insight that other organisations working in different settings may apply and benefit from.
The presentation will share relevant case studies of clients and organisations which illustrate the concept of ‘joined-up practice’, demonstrating how the preexisting networks within this particular regional context can be best utilized to support participants to reach their full potential.
