Music technology 101: Key tools, trends and considerations for the use of technology in music therapy
Abstract Overview
Over the last 15 years, the swift progress of technology has transformed many aspects of contemporary Australian society, including communication, education, employment and healthcare delivery. As our society and the world at large continues to advance technologically, new opportunities for creativity, innovation, and interpersonal communication have emerged.
New technologies can increase participation and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, for example through the creation of prosthetic limbs, adaptive and augmentative communication devices, or through health monitoring devices such as smart watches. Within music therapy, technology can provide opportunities for clients to participate in music making that may not have been afforded solely through the use of traditional or acoustic instruments.
Adapted and digital musical instruments can assist individuals with physical and cognitive challenges to actively participate in music-making experiences (Magee, 2006; Hahna et al., 2012). Moreover, the use of technology within music therapy may be a strong motivator to engage in therapy, as it can help facilitate musical experiences that resonate within an individual’s cultural and personal context (Crooke & McFerran, 2019; Nagler, 1993).
The proposed 90 minute interactive Masterclass will provide an overview of current advances in music technology as well as best practices for implementing music technologies within diverse music therapy settings.
Key topics covered in this Masterclass include:
- Electronic music technologies - Attendees will be provided with the opportunity to actively explore a range of devices within the Masterclass.
- The Accessible Music Model - A framework for understanding when, how and why to use music technology in Music Therapy.
- Use of AI within Music Therapy - Risks, opportunities, current tools and future trends.
This Masterclass is suitable for all clinicians, regardless of current level of experience using technology. An emphasis on group discussion, peer-sharing and interactive learning will ensure all attendees can increase their knowledge and confidence to successfully utilise technology within their work.
