Voices of Country: Empowering Aboriginal Families Through Song, Play, and Connection

Abstract

This presentation explores a long-running, collaborative music therapy program designed to empower Aboriginal families with young children through culturally responsive practice. Grounded in song, movement, and play-based interactions, the program fosters positive parenting, strengthens early childhood development, and nurtures a sense of belonging and cultural identity. Delivered in partnership with Aboriginal workers and community organisations, the program integrates language and song from Aboriginal cultures to support connection to Country, kinship, and culture.
Now in its third year, this initiative reflects the impact of sustained engagement and trust-building in creating safe, supportive environments for families. Music therapy sessions are complemented by informal opportunities for families to connect, share experiences, and access community support, building a broader sense of peer connection and resilience.
This presentation considers how music therapy can uphold person- and culture-centred values within systems increasingly driven by measurable outcomes. While improvements in child development, parenting confidence, and school-readiness are demonstrable, equally powerful are the less quantifiable moments: shared experiences, pride in culture, and community cohesion through music.
This case study offers a forward-looking model for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable music therapy practice that embraces both innovation and tradition. Attendees will gain insight into how co-designed, culturally grounded music therapy can respond to community-identified needs, support self-determination, and contribute meaningfully to intergenerational wellbeing. It also invites reflection on how our profession can continue to grow while respecting and amplifying the diverse voices we serve.
