Sing, Sign & Say: Innovative Use of Key Word Sign, AAC and Music for Communication

Abstract

This interactive and practical workshop explores how music can support the use of Key Word Sign (KWS) and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to build functional communication using core vocabulary. Facilitated by a dual-trained speech pathologist and registered music therapist, the session highlights how music-based routines, songs, and improvisation can be powerful tools for supporting individuals with complex communication needs.

Participants will:

- Learn what core vocabulary is and why it’s essential for communication across contexts
- Practice high-frequency Key Word Signs aligned with core words
- Learn how to use KWS and AAC into songs, chants, and musical play
- Explore simple, effective ways to support multimodal communication, including gesture, signing, visuals, voice, and AAC systems

The workshop includes live demonstration, hands-on signing, singing, and adaptable strategies suitable for a range of clinical settings. No prior experience with Key Word Sign or AAC is required. To consolidate learning, participants will work in small groups to create and present a short song using both singing and signing. This final activity brings together the key concepts of the workshop in a fun, collaborative, and confidence-building way.

Whether you work in disability, early intervention, or education, this session will equip you with creative tools to support inclusive communication—and inspire new ways to make music therapy more engaging, expressive, and accessible for all.
