Enhancing Family Therapy Outcomes Through Dyadic Music Therapy in a Child and Youth Mental Health Day Program

Abstract

Verbal approaches are central to family therapy, yet some caregivers and children struggle to engage with these methods. This presentation introduces a dyadic music therapy protocol developed to complement and enhance family therapy outcomes in an intensive child and youth mental health day program. The program is grounded in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), which supports individuals to better understand their own and others’ thoughts and feelings. Elements from the Circle of Security parenting approach are integrated to structure therapeutic interventions with families.

Dyadic music therapy offers an accessible, creative alternative to traditional verbal work. Caregivers and children engage in joint musical improvisation followed by shared verbal reflection. The music therapist facilitates these sessions by fostering a safe space for playful interaction, emotional connection, and co-regulation. This dynamic process is designed to support the development of mentalizing capacities in both the child and the caregiver.

Two case examples will be shared, including excerpts from caregiver feedback and clinician reflections. These highlight how dyads reconnected through play, rediscovered joy in each other’s company, and developed strategies for emotional regulation. Semi-structured interviews with the caregivers revealed themes of relaxation, enjoyment, increased confidence, and meaningful nonverbal communication.

This practice-based presentation will explore how dyadic music therapy can deepen emotional attunement between caregivers and children, strengthen their relational bonds, and support improved mental health outcomes. Attendees will gain practical insights into applying this protocol in clinical settings and consider how music therapy can be integrated within broader family-based mental health frameworks.
