Sounding Change: Music Therapy Practices for Systems Transformation

Abstract

Music Therapists are uniquely positioned to influence change from the inside out. In our world, systems are shifting, from health care and community supports to institutions and workplaces, all underpinned by entrenched patriarchal structures and a social-political climate marked by rising political conservatism and growing challenges to equity and inclusion. In this experiential workshop, Music Therapists Meagan Hunt and Rachael Comte invite participants to explore how music therapy practices can support systems change by beginning with nervous system regulation, connection to self, and connection to others.

Participants will be guided through techniques including meditation, somatic bodywork, and singing in harmony to experience how these tools can ground, connect, and prepare us to face complexity. These practices foster the inner regulation and relational safety needed to engage in the challenging, creative, and collaborative work of transforming systems — whether clinical, organisational, cultural, or political. When people are grounded, regulated, and connected, they are more able to have courageous conversations, challenge entrenched systems, and co-create meaningful change.

Furthermore, this session explores the potential of applying these methods in corporate and professional environments, offering music therapists a new avenue for impactful and financially sustainable work. As traditional funding structures like the NDIS face uncertainty, diversifying practice is essential. Bringing Music Therapy-informed regulation and connection practices into workplaces is not only deeply needed, it opens up fresh possibilities for influence, relevance, and income.

Participants will leave with practical tools to use in their own lives and practices, and a renewed sense of how Music Therapy can contribute to broader cultural and systemic shifts.
