Jack of all trades, master of none: Tackling imposter syndrome in music therapy

Abstract

Imposter syndrome (IS) is a quietly persistent experience among many Registered Music Therapists—emerging in moments of professional uncertainty, interdisciplinary tension, or systemic change. Whether stepping into a new setting, working in isolation, or navigating shifting frameworks like the NDIS, therapists often question their competence, scope, and identity, even when their work is grounded in evidence, skill and integrity.

This experiential workshop responds to the growing recognition of imposter syndrome within our profession. Drawing from research, practice, and workforce data we will explore the roots and expressions of imposter syndrome in our professional context. Through the framework of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model, participants will be encouraged to reflect on and explore how impostor syndrome has impacted them, in both personal and professional ways. We will discuss the origins of the idea of impostor syndrome through a feminist lens and consider whether the term is a useful one for Registered Music Therapists to identify with.

Together, we will map the tension between the different therapy models we use and examine how external expectations contribute to feelings of inadequacy. Participants will engage in practical activities to clarify their professional identity, acknowledge strengths, identify areas for growth, and develop an actionable plan for ongoing development. Activities will include -

- In small groups, participants will explore some of the beliefs where they don’t feel ‘enough’ and that might lead to experiencing impostor syndrome
- Individually, participants will identify the values they hold that contribute to strengthening themselves against impostor syndrome
- Individually and with the group, participants will identify and record what aspects of their daily work give them strength, energy and purpose. These are some of the things that can help build confidence and fight impostor syndrome
- A group discussion will be held around how external entities influence our self-image and impact on the development of impostor syndrome

This workshop is a call to reclaim power and pride in the unique work we do. By deepening self-awareness and recognising the structural forces at play, we can loosen the grip of imposter syndrome and move forward with a clearer sense of purpose, confidence, and belonging in our profession.
