Join the Crowd: Reimagining Collective Music Making for All

Abstract

Have you ever met someone who loves music but feels blocked from making it themselves—believing they’re “not good enough,” “not trained,” or “too old to start”? Have you wondered how we, as Registered Music Therapists, can extend the transformative power of music beyond the clinical space, into the wider community—without compromising our therapeutic integrity?

This highly interactive and experiential PDS workshop invites participants to explore how community music-making—especially collective singing in harmony—can shift entrenched beliefs, awaken creativity, and promote deep connection on emotional, neurological, social, and physical levels. Together, we will experience what it's like to step out of our comfort zones and into a playful, supportive group dynamic that encourages experimentation, freedom, and joy.

Using an unconventional choir format, we will explore body percussion, vocal play, and collaborative improvisation, culminating in a shared performance of a joyous Spanish song arranged in three-part harmony. While the song will be prearranged, it will remain open and flexible—shaped in real time by the contributions, energy, and interaction of the group. In this way, participants will experience how structure and spontaneity can coexist in community music-making, creating space for co-creation and ownership.

Come with your voice, your curiosity, your body, and an open mind. Expect to be surprised, moved, and inspired to take this work into the world and ignite a love for music-making in those who thought it was too late or not for them.

Let’s unleash the power of the crowd—together.
