Let’s Build It! A LegoTM Serious Play workshop to create a vision for the future of music therapy advocacy
Abstract
Advocacy is an integral part of our daily practice as RMTs. After a challenging six months in the advocacy space, RMTs may be feeling a sense of fatigue and discouragement around the understanding of music therapy in the community and what to do next. LegoTM is a fun and creative tool that can help us to think differently about complex problems. This workshop will use LegoTM Serious PlayTM as a way to explore priorities for advocacy both at an individual workplace level and at a broader collective level. Participants will be supported to use LegoTM to create a vision for the ‘future state’ of music therapy within their workplace and across Australia.
Participants will be guided by a certified LegoTM Serious PlayTM facilitator to use LegoTM individually and in small groups to build:
- On their own, within activities asking questions like: What is your vision for music therapy advocacy in your workplace? What is it now and how can you get there?
- Collectively, within activities asking questions like: Connect your builds together. What is your group’s vision for music therapy advocacy in Australia? What it is it now and how can we get there? What are some barriers and enablers for getting to this future state?
Participants will build skills in advocacy, equipping them with the confidence to develop a high-level vision for advocacy that can underpin their daily practice. A clear vision for advocacy on an individual level can lead to increased funding, program development and growth of professional identity in the multidisciplinary team environment. A strong vision for advocacy on a collective level will shape our profession’s way forward and ensure positive advocacy and sustainability for years to come.
