Harmonising Innovation and Authenticity: AI-Enhanced Songwriting in Music Therapy Practice

Abstract

As music therapy continues to evolve in response to technological change, AI-assisted songwriting presents both exciting possibilities and important clinical considerations. This presentation explores how AI tools can be integrated into music therapy in a way that supports emotional expression, enhances accessibility, and preserves the integrity of the therapeutic relationship.

Drawing from a real-world clinical case study, the presentation demonstrates how AI can act as a co-creative partner in the songwriting process—offering structure, inspiration, and momentum for clients who may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to express themselves through traditional methods. Rather than replacing human connection, AI is positioned as a tool that supports creativity, scaffolds self-expression, and opens new entry points into therapeutic work.

The presentation focuses on three key areas:

1. Practical applications of AI songwriting tools in clinical settings, including techniques that complement existing music therapy practices.
2. Strategies for maintaining therapeutic authenticity, ensuring that the emotional and relational safety of the client remains central.
3. Implications for clinical outcomes and professional sustainability, particularly for clients with barriers to verbal or conventional songwriting approaches.

This presentation will offer grounded, ethical guidance for music therapists navigating the integration of emerging tools. It acknowledges both the promise and the limitations of technology in therapeutic spaces, and centres the therapist’s role in shaping how these tools are used.

By presenting practical examples alongside critical reflections, this session encourages music therapists to consider how they might adapt creatively and responsibly to an increasingly digital healthcare environment—ensuring that the heart of music therapy remains human, connected, and responsive.
