Massey University Accommodation recently implemented a bespoke pre arrival online induction, in collaboration with AD+MH Education Specialists. As part of the residential contract, each resident were obligated to complete the online induction before receiving their key. The online induction was integrated into the StarRez portal to further enhance the transition process. The aim of the pre arrival online induction is to increase residents understanding and connection to Massey University’s cultural expectations when living on campus. The online induction provides residents with site specific information including: - Welcome Message: - Residential Handbook - Student Safety, Support Services & Wellbeing - Respectful Relationships: - Diversity & Inclusion - Fire Safety - Alcohol & Drug Education - Mental Health - Wellness Since introducing an online induction, numerous benefits have been achieved for our students and our organisation. Firstly, it sets Massey University students up for success, equipping them with essential knowledge and fostering a sense of belonging to the community even before they physically arrive. This early engagement helps alleviate potential anxieties or uncertainties students may have about starting their academic journey. Secondly, the online induction allows Massey University to streamline the welcome process ensuring welcome presentations are more effectively. By delivering key information online, ensures students receive essential details about operations, and what is planned for them, without overwhelming them with information. This targeted approach enhances students engagement and attentiveness, as they can digest the information at their own pace and revisit it as needed. Overall, the online induction has further enhanced the student experience by providing a structured and efficient introduction to our organisation, empowering students to start their academic journey with confidence and a sense of belonging. As of the start of April 2024, 97.2% of residents had completed all topics of the online induction.

Biography

Ashley Gurney is the Founder and Managing Director of Alcohol, Drug & Mental Health Education Specialists (AD+MH). Ashley has more than 20 years experience in the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health sector and founded AD+MH in 2010 with the aim of increasing public knowledge of alcohol, drugs and mental health to reduce harms and risks. Ashley has a Bachelor Degree in Behavioural Neuroscience, a Diploma of Alcohol & Other Drugs Work, Diploma of Mental Health & Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Furthermore, Ashley is an accredited Mental Health First Aid Instructor and has delivered more than 70 Accredited MHFA Courses to a wide variety of organisations and individuals. Previously, Ashley worked for the Salvation Army as a 24/7 alcohol & drug youth outreach worker for 4 years on the streets of Melbourne and country Victoria. Prior to this role Ashley designed and managed nightclubs in Melbourne and London (UK) for approximately 5 years. AD+MH currently provide every university in Australia & New Zealand with their numerous services. This includes more than 310 university residential locations. Furthermore, ADES provided approximately 1.5 million Australians with services and resources in 2023.

Biography

Kelly Manning is the National Manager of Accommodation Services at Massey University. With a career spanning 26 years in the education sector, Kelly has accrued extensive experience across further education, secondary education, and tertiary education. Originally from the UK, Kelly began her journey in various education roles from Student Support, Student Recruitment and Transition and a Careers Education Teacher, before joining Massey University's accommodation team 13 years ago as the Accommodation Manager at the Auckland Campus. In August of last year, Kelly transitioned into the National Manager position, indicating her leadership capabilities and dedication to enhancing accommodation services at Massey University. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a passion for supporting young people to reach their full potential in their educational pursuits, notably through her involvement in the UK Government's Aim Higher Programme. Her contribution to this initiative were recognized with an award for outstanding achievement, which was presented by Jon Denham MP Department of Education and Skills.
