Spiro Raftopoulos completed his gastroenterology training in Perth and subsequently undertook interventional fellowship training in one the largest interventional centres in North America at the prestigious St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto Canada. On his return to Perth in 2012 he was appointed as an Interventional Endoscopist and Consultant Gastroenterologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he established several endoscopic treatment programs including advanced therapeutics in the management of Barrett’s Oesophagus, Large Colonic Polyps, Zenker’s Divertciulum and early GI malignancy. In 2017 he introduced POEM (per oral endoscopic myotomy) for management of Achalasia into Western Australia and runs the largest Achalasia treatment program in Perth having performed over 80 POEM procedures. He is on several national advisory committees including the Cancer Council of Australia and the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists and has been a member of several national and international treatment guidelines including the clinical practice guidelines for Barrett’s Oesophagus in Australia. He has authored / co-authored over 50 peer reviewed publications and textbook chapters. He was appointed an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor with Medical Schools at UWA and Curtin University in 2023 and is faculty member of the Australian and New Zealand Endoscopy Leaders Forum and a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia. He was the recipient of the A&A Saw Medical Research Fellowship in 2010.
