Biography

Merrilee WIlliams RN, BN, Master of Health Sciences- Nursing. Merrilee is currently the chair person of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) Gastroenterology Nurses College, leading a committee of 8 members, and a college membership of 460 healthcare professionals in the specialty of Gastroenterology. Concurrently, she is a nurse representative on the medical equivalent committee of New Zealand Gastroenterology Society, as well as numerous committees that guide our professionals in gastroenterology in NZ. Merrilee is the Charge Nurse Manager of Gastroenterology at Te Whatu Ora- Southern, based at Dunedin Hospital in the South Island of New Zealand. Previous to this position, she was a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Endoscopy at Mercy Hospital in Dunedin. She has been instrumental in developing new endoscopy services in the private sector in Otago, and advises on guidelines, policy and workflows in endoscopy settings. With 16 years of experience in gastroenterology including Hepatology nursing, clinical trials coordinator, endoscopy, and developing the IBD Clinical Nurse Specialist role; she completed her Master of Health Science degree in 2019 at the University of Otago. Her dissertation project explored the use of an animated video to give patients information about colonoscopy to support informed consent in endoscopy.
