Catching the Flame: working together to develop gastroenterology nurses
Abstract
Description
The embers for the current Essentials of Gastroenterology program began some six years ago with a hospital organising and hosting a one-day education program to enhance the nursing work force in this rapidly growing specialty. The value of the program was acknowledged with the spark of external one-off funding for 4-day programs. The education program then continued as a slow burn one day program until the support of senior nursing clinical and nursing leaders saw the flames erupt with six metropolitan health facilities working together for the last 2 years to develop and deliver a 3-day program. This presentation will describe the fire that has resulted in this working together.
Feelings
Nursing leader stakeholders have seen the value of the program supporting the participation of educators and clinical nurses to deliver the program for novice gastroenterology nurses. Participants have reported an increase their knowledge and confidence.
Evaluation
Even COVID could not extinguish the program embers, with the program blazing the path for moving our education programs online via Teams.
Analysis
The program compliments the six module Transition Support self-directed learning program. A case study is integrated throughout the program illuminate patient care and safety.
Conclusion and action plan
The group's inferno continues with plans to undertake research to determine the effect of program learning. Fire continues to sweep through the educators and clinical nurses to deliver the program to better prepare nurses to deliver safe patient care in gastroenterology.
