When enteral feeding tubes go wrong
Biography
Michelle Ebzery commenced in the Graduate Nurse Program at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) Brisbane, in 1996, working in various General Medical, Surgical and Specialist wards before commencing in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology in 1999. After noticing a large gap in service for Gastrostomy Patients, Michelle developed the role of Gastrostomy Resource Nurse, providing education, guidance and clinical support to staff and patients regarding gastrostomy tube care and follow up. What started as an interest in Clinical Education, soon developed into a specialty area of nursing knowledge, due largely to the previous lack of service and follow up for this patient cohort.
In early 2016 Michelle commenced in one of the first Nurse Navigator Roles in Queensland health, as the Nurse Navigator – Gastrostomy and Tracking at PAH.
Since then, Michelle has been working hard to improve the profile of gastrostomy pre- and postprocedure care with PAH medical and nursing staff; to foster positive partnerships between patients, multidisciplinary team members and community services; to reduce unexpected hospital presentations for gastrostomy complications; and to improve the health literacy of patients and their families/carers by providing guidance, support and education as they learn to care for their gastrostomy tube.
