During her service she supported the care of casualties flown back during the Falklands conflict and was awarded a Royal Humane Society Award for bravery for care of casualties during a London Underground fire. Helen started in Endoscopy in 1990 and progressed to sister of the unit and following completion of her master’s degree became a specialist nurse and clinical endoscopist in 1999. During this time she had a part time secondment as National Nurse Advisor to the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in England, helping to set up the programme.
