Biography

Dr. Yuto Shimamura is a consultant interventional endoscopist and Clinical Lead for luminal and third-space endoscopy at Austin Health in Melbourne, Australia. He also holds an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary) at the University of Melbourne. He completed his training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo (2009–2015), followed by advanced fellowship training in therapeutic endoscopy at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto (2015–2017). He subsequently served as Assistant Professor at Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital in Tokyo, a globally recognised centre for digestive diseases, where he also obtained his PhD. In 2024, he moved to Austin Health to further advance the field of therapeutic endoscopy, with a particular focus on luminal interventions. Dr. Shimamura specialises in advanced endoscopic resection and third-space endoscopy. His expertise includes endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR), laparoscopic–endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS), and per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and its variants, including per-oral endoscopic tumour resection (POET), Zenker POEM, and gastric POEM. His clinical practice extends to endoscopic management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including anti-reflux mucosectomy (ARMS). He has authored nearly 150 peer-reviewed publications and remains actively engaged in international research, academic, and educational initiatives. He serves on committees for the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and is an Associate Editor for Digestive Endoscopy and a member of the International Editorial Board of Endoscopy. Dr. Shimamura is committed to advancing therapeutic endoscopy through innovation, research, and education.
