3. Preparing a presentation for conference
- Invited presentation vs abstract presentation
- How to stay aligned to your abstract
- Knowing what to include and what not to include
- Choosing between oral and poster presentation

4. Presenting Skills
- Both oral and poster presentations
- Use of PowerPoint for oral presentations - slide design
- What to include on slides and what not to include
- Synthesising literature and data
- Keeping to time
- Responding to questions
- Managing nerves
- How to structure a poster

5. Collecting Data
- Prospective data collection
- Collecting data in your role (nurse sensitive indicators etc)

Biography

Associate Professor Olivia Cook RN, BN (Hons) Dip Qual Mg, PhD is a registered nurse, educator and researcher with 20+ years experience in the fields of cancer nursing and women’s health. In July 2025, Olivia commenced a new joint appointment as Associate Professor of Cancer Nursing at Bayside Health and Monash University. Her role is focused on leading and supporting nurse-led research to drive equity and improve the experience and outcomes of people with cancer. Prior to this appointment, Olivia was the Head of Nurse Education and Research at the McGrath Foundation, supporting the 300+ McGrath Cancer Care Nurses located across Australia. In this role she was a key leader in the expansion of the McGrath Foundation as a provider of cancer nursing services across all cancer types. Prior to completion of her PhD in 2018 and Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 2021 at Monash Nursing and Midwifery, Olivia held senior nursing appointments at Epworth Healthcare for over a decade. Olivia is passionate about nurse-led research and is a multi-methods researcher with particular experience in consensus methodologies, co-design, instrument and survey design and psychometric testing, systematic review methodologies, and interview and focus group facilitation. She leads large collaborative projects and is committed to partnering with consumers to ensure that there is a strong and active lived experience voice in all research that she is involved in. Olivia contributes actively to her profession through multidisciplinary collaborations, specialist practice networks, committee memberships and student supervision. She has been an active contributor to the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia for many years and currently serves on the Research Standing Committee. She contributes to nursing scholarship more broadly as a regular peer-reviewer for several journals and was herself published in the highest ranked journal globally ‘CA a cancer journal for clinicians’ with an impact factor of 292.278 in the year of publication (2019).

Biography

Daniel is a Clinical Nurse Consultant of Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, NSW. He started his career in gastroenterology in his home town of Perth, WA at Fremantle Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital & St John of God Subiaco Hospital, working both in Inflammatory Bowel Disease & Intestinal Failure. Daniel is currently the Education Lead for the IBDNA National Steering Committee, Member of the IBDNA, Scientific Committee Chair for GENCA and also sits on the Editorial Board for the J.GENCA journal. Daniel also has a background in education, with a Masters Degree in Health Professions Education. His goal as President is to enhance GENCA’s educational offerings, to ensure our members have access to the best resources and to engage and collaborate with other like-minded colleges to further the role of advance practice nursing. Daniel also hopes to build on the special interest groups already in GENCA, to better reflect the variety of sub-specialties in gastroenterology nursing and ensure that we meet the needs of these nursing specialties.
