The bright yellow trolley - facilitating safe paediatric critical care.
12:30 PM - 12:35 PMAbstract
Paediatric resuscitation adds an additional layer of stress and cognitive load to clinicians involved, especially when they have minimal exposure to paediatric resuscitation in clinical scenarios or simulations. Orange Health Service Emergency Department responded to a clinical event where a debrief identified difficulties in finding required paediatric resuscitation equipment across the facility.
While Broselow (Paediatric Resuscitation) Trolleys contain first-line lifesaving equipment, clinical events requiring additional equipment and consumables posed issues with locating equipment and familiarity with setup and use. In response, Orange Health Service Emergency Department formed a multidisciplinary project team.
The project team identified that paediatric patients often require lifesaving intervention in areas outside the Emergency Department due to logistical delays and the pathway for care in Rural Referral Hospitals. The Paediatric Resuscitation Trolley was developed with the expectation that it would be needed after hours and when minimal clinical support was available.
The bright yellow trolley is stocked with items such as paediatric arterial lines, paediatric Hamilton circuits, and paediatric central line kits. It also contains quick reference guides for key pieces of equipment to support nurses who may not be familiar with paediatric critical care consumables.
This trolley has been used in several clinical cases, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Most importantly, it has enabled Emergency Department nurses to collaborate clinically with Intensive Care and Paediatric nurses to revise content and processes, supporting the delivery of safe paediatric critical care. This novel idea is now being considered for implementation across similar facilities in the local health district. The Newborn Emergency Transport Service is also aware of the trolley's presence and contents, enabling virtual clinicians to integrate seamlessly into front-line teams.
