Education Program Development for Emergency Nurse Practitioners

11:10 AM - 11:30 AM

Abstract

Background
The Alfred Hospital Emergency Department (ED) Nurse Practitioner (NP) team have an established program for continued professional development (CPD) of NP Candidates (NPCs) and endorsed NPs.
The NP-CPD Program is a detailed syllabus encouraging the candidate to undertake self-directed learning, problem solving and critical thinking skills to prepare for endorsement.
Methodology
The NP Masters provides a generalist approach to the NP role, however does not prepare the candidate for the clinical aspects of emergency specialty. The NP-CPD Program is complimentary to the masters, providing modular based prescriptive theoretical content and problem-based scenarios to foster clinical expertise. The program aligns with Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council accreditation standards for endorsement.
Results
The 18-month program has been running at The Alfred since 2011 with 15 NPs successfully completing endorsement.
Audience
This program is specifically designed for emergency NPs; however components of the program have relevance to other NP clinical environments.
Due to interest in the CPD from interstate EDs for their own NPC training, a licensing arrangement has been developed. We are currently undertaking an 18-month pilot project with Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in a collaborative process with the NP team at the Alfred providing the NP-CPD program and ongoing support and mentorship.
Conclusion
An evaluation will be performed at the conclusion of this project to assess the transferability and suitability for other EDs to implement and license the program.
Implications for practice
Our aspiration is that the Hobart initiative serves as a launching point for numerous EDs across Australia (and overseas) to utilise the NP-CPD program as we are currently expanding the program to other organisations within Australia.
We aim to improve access to education and enhance career prospects for NP candidates. A shared curriculum will enable consistency in the training and professional development available to emergency NPs throughout Australia.
