Building our Future ED Nurse Leaders ; The rise of Clinical Nurse Specialists
12:25 PM - 12:30 PMAbstract
Background:
In 2019, I identified a significant gap in clinical nurse leaders in our Emergency Department. As a young, naive Emergency nurse back in 2009 I was lucky enough to be surrounded by Clinical Nurse Specialists on the floor every day who shared their wisdom, their time and support through my early days of Emergency Nursing. Those who moulded me to be the ED nurse I am today.
With an increasing junior workforce, It was important to develop and encourage our senior nurses into clinical leadership roles to optimise care delivery to our patients.
Method:
A future Leaders group was established to start to build up and promote putting the Clinical Nurse Specialist Role back into the department. We discuss leadership, clinical topics, quality improvement ideas/projects and assist with the development of our staff's clinical portfolios for submission to apply for their CNS grade review.
Results:
Since implementation of the group with passion and dedication, and COVID related obstacles, we have had 14 successful applicants gaining their Clinical Nurse Specialist 1 grade elevating our staff and patient experiences.
Conclusion:
The biggest challenge we face is keeping them in the department after showing off their skills, they secure promotions!
