LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in the Emergency Department: A Multidisciplinary Initiative
4:50 PM - 5:10 PMBiography
Liana Girvin (they/them) is a non-binary, queer-identifying clinical nurse who began their career in 2012 through a graduate program at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. After exploring various specialties, they discovered a strong passion for emergency medicine and joined the Emergency Department at the new Royal Adelaide build in 2017. Following maternity leave, Liana moved to the Emergency Department at Flinders Medical Centre, where they navigated the experience of coming out in a new professional environment. This personal journey sparked a commitment to improving safety, visibility, and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people in healthcare settings. Liana now chairs the FMC ED LGBTQIA+ Committee, a multidisciplinary group focused on fostering a welcoming environment for queer staff and patients. They also collaborate with colleagues across the health network and beyond to drive positive cultural change. Liana is dedicated to creating healthcare spaces where LGBTQIA+ individuals feel seen, respected, and safe.
