Co-designing care in a busy hospital emergency department

9:20 AM - 10:00 AM

Abstract

The Emergency Department Consumer Advisory Group (EDCAG) at Fiona Stanley Hospital was established in 2016 by senior ED consultants. Now led by consumers, it is currently the only group of its kind in WA.

The EDCAG is an innovative alliance of consumers and senior ED clinical staff that is uniquely positioned to enable consumer perspectives to inform service planning. Since its creation, the group has evolved to become a close and productive collaboration based on trust, shared understanding, and mutual respect.

The group aims to ensure that a co-design approach becomes firmly embedded in the planning and designing of ED services. One example of a co-designed project, the ‘Patients at Risk’ project, came about in response to staff concerns that the needs of under-served or ‘at risk’ patients were not being met effectively in the ED. The project resulted in the development of a series of Standards for the Care of Vulnerable Patients in the ED at Fiona Stanley Hospital to promote a person-centred approach to care, and the creation of associated online education modules. Co-design proved invaluable in ensuring the standards and the associated education program reflected consumer aspirations for a person-centred approach to care, while also respecting and acknowledging the needs and perspectives of ED staff.

Today’s presentation will explain how co-design principles informed the project, showcase some of the positive outcomes, and explore some of the key learnings that emerged from the experiences of consumers and staff who engaged in the co-design process.

Biography

I am a former teacher and teacher educator currently involved as a health consumer advisor to the Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group. I have been chair of the Emergency Department Consumer Advisory Group (EDCAG) for the past six years and chair of the Consumer Advisory Council for the past two, with a key focus of my work being to advocate for a person-centred approach to healthcare across the organisation. As chair of the EDCAG, I have had wonderful opportunities to be involved with staff in co-designing projects intended to encourage an inclusive environment and promote person-centred care in Fiona Stanley Hospital’s emergency department.
