The power of patching
Abstract
This case study presents a seven-year-old girl with a history of right eye ruptured globe in August 2020, followed by extensive surgical intervention including lensectomy, anterior, and posterior vitrectomy. Two and a half years post-injury, her visual acuity was 0.5/12 (equivalent to 6/144), with absent binocular vision and reduced peripheral visual field on the right side. Her mother initiated a rigorous patching regimen starting from 30 minutes daily, now extended to 3.5 to 4.5 hours daily. Low vision strategies were implemented to support her during patching periods. Over the past 18 months, diligent adherence to patching has led to substantial improvement in her visual acuity.
This case underscores the importance for clinicians to consider patching programs even in cases of severe ocular trauma, emphasizing the potential for significant visual recovery with persistent intervention.
