Advanced practice orthoptic pilot study at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital
Abstract
The Acute Ophthalmology Service Pilot project began in July 2023 and was funded by the Victorian Department of Health to explore Allied Health Advanced Practice.
The project was to determine the impact of utilising Advanced Practice Orthoptists within the Acute Ophthalmology Service (AOS) environment on patient flow.
Two Senior Orthoptists Kylie Robinson and Debra Gleeson have been working sessions alongside the head of AOS and other consultants.
They are working under the same guidelines as registrars and Hospital Medical Officers.
They initially guided their own education through reading the clinical guidelines of commonly seen pathologies and by online research.
Since Dr Lukas Sahhar came on board as the project champion he has driven direction and education.
We will discuss various aspects of our work in the AOS clinic.
