Purpose: Accurate assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP) is central to glaucoma care, yet tonometry reliability depends on precise technique. Because the procedure requires corneal contact, poor technique may compromise the cornea and IOP measurement accuracy. Its invasive nature can increase learner anxiety, and patient safety concerns, limiting early repeated practice. Simulation based education using 3D-printed cornea models can offer a safe repeatable environment for developing technical precision and confidence prior to patient contact. This study evaluated the use of simulation training on orthoptic students from UTS and La Trobe University. Methods: To evaluate technical confidence, perceived competence, and learner anxiety, students completed online surveys at three stages: at baseline prior to simulation, immediately following simulation-based training, and following tonometry exposure during clinical placement. This design enabled comparison of self-reported readiness across the learning trajectory from initial exposure to simulation-based skill acquisition and authentic clinical setting application. Confidence was rated using Likert scales, with additional questions on clinical performance. Participation was voluntary, although all orthoptic students had access to simulation modules as tonometry is a required curriculum skill. Results: Across 106 surveys, pre-training confidence in performing tonometry was 34%, and 64% felt more relaxed knowing a simulated model was available. Following simulation training, up to 90% reported high confidence and felt well prepared for placement. While opportunity to practice tonometry on placement was frequent, rebound was the predominant method. Conclusion: Most students described improved confidence and ability to perform tonometry with and without supervision following this training methodology.
