Details

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) requires timely assessment and ongoing monitoring to reduce the risk of permanent vision loss. As demand for neonatal ophthalmic services continues to grow, orthoptists are well positioned to play an increasingly important role in supporting ROP care through advanced widefield retinal imaging. This presentation outlines the development and implementation of an ROP monitoring clinic protocol, where widefield retinal imaging using Optos and Clarus systems in the outpatient setting are used in infants undergoing ROP assessment. Developed with orthoptists at the forefront, the protocol provides a structured approach to image acquisition, supporting ophthalmologists in monitoring disease progression. We will discuss the practical aspects of establishing this service, the challenges encountered and the future of integrating retinal imaging into routine clinical practice. The presentation will also explore how wide-field retinal imaging in infants with ROP can improve documentation, enhance continuity of care and provide a foundation for the development of advanced orthoptist-led ROP clinics in the outpatient settings. By sharing our experience, we aim to encourage and support other paediatric ophthalmic services to adopt similar models of care.
