Background: Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a multifactorial eye disease characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, leading to ocular discomfort, visual disturbance, and potential damage to the ocular surface. The prevalence of DED in Australia and New Zealand has significantly increased, impacting a wider demographic and posing a
growing challenge to society. As Director and Senior Clinician with the leading and largest group of independent Dry Eye clinics in Australia, Dry Eye Solution is committed to addressing this public health concern through specialized care.
Objectives: This presentation aims to elucidate current diagnostic methodologies, evidence-based treatment options, and management strategies for DED. I will discuss the Toyos Protocols developed by Dr. Rolando Toyos, a board-certified ophthalmologist renowned for inventing intense pulsed light (IPL) and low-level light therapy (LLLT).
Furthermore, I will highlight the importance of personalised management plans, addressing advanced in-office treatments and lifestyle modifications, including screen use, environmental exposure, and dietary factors.
Methods: A review of recent literature will outline advancements in diagnostic tools and contemporary treatment modalities. Case studies will illustrate successful outcomes achieved through collaborative care models.
Conclusion: DED management represents a growing and dynamic area within orthoptics, offering an opportunity for clinicians to specialize in a field that directly enhances patient quality of life. This presentation aims to inspire both new graduates and experienced professionals to engage in this rewarding sub-specialty.
