Background
People with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) frequently experience unmet psychosocial and educational needs beyond routine clinical care. Eye Connect is a community-based support program designed to address these needs through health literacy, practical guidance, and emotional support. This study evaluated the impact and participant outcomes of Eye Connect in a real-world setting.
Methods
A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted using program data (n=396), responses from a pre and post service wellness survey (n=122), a cross-sectional participant survey (n=81), semi-structured participant interviews (n=10), and staff surveys (n=3). Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and using regression modelling; qualitative data underwent thematic analysis.
Results
Analysis of the pre- and post-wellness surveys revealed participants with below-threshold baseline scores demonstrated significant improvements in their understanding of AMD, control, and concern around living with AMD. In the cross-sectional survey, positive endorsement was highest for intravitreal injection treatment adherence (95%), health literacy (79%), accessibility (79%), and psychosocial support (74%). Qualitative findings identified increased self-advocacy, coping ability, and self-management skills.
Discussion
Participation in the Eye Connect service was associated with improved condition understanding, perceived control, and health literacy, particularly among participants with lower baseline knowledge or confidence. The program was viewed positively for its accessibility and psychosocial support; however, social connectedness and mental health remained areas to strengthen. Findings support the role of community-based support interventions as a valued complement to clinical care for people with AMD.
Conclusion
The presentation will highlight key evaluation findings relevant to orthoptists in the provision of holistic support for people with macular disease.
