Emergency ophthalmology remains a significant gap in regional New South Wales, where many Emergency Departments (EDs) have limited access to on-site ophthalmology and no reliable way to share diagnostic-quality eye images with tertiary specialists. Delays in specialist input can increase clinical risk, prolong ED stays and contribute to transfers to metropolitan centres. Tele-Vision is a newly launched, digitally enabled emergency ophthalmology pilot designed to support selected patients presenting to regional EDs
The hub-and-spoke model connects a participating ED with the Tele-Vision ophthalmology team at Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital. Regional clinicians undertake the initial assessment and capture external eye and non-mydriatic fundus images, which are transferred directly to a statewide viewing platform. A secure video consultation and real-time specialist review support diagnosis, local management, escalation and transfer decisions.
Early implementation experience will highlight the practical requirements for establishing emergency tele-ophthalmology, including workflow integration, imaging capability, staff training, role clarity, governance and technology readiness.
