Living with unaddressed issues from uncorrectable low vision (due to eye disease or a systemic condition) is a growing concern and potential burden on the aging population worldwide. Low vision brings the increased risk of falls, reduced independence, social isolation and depression. Evidence demonstrates that not all those requiring rehabilitation see themselves as ‘in need’. This is for a range of reasons, particularly one’s perception of ‘need.’ The personal and financial effects of underutilising low vision rehabilitation services rank significantly in comparison with other health issues in some countries where these services exist.
If the barriers to use of rehabilitation services could be more fully understood; then this might ultimately help to reduce the associated burden of disease and potentially help to improve future client experiences in this growing domain of rehabilitative eye health care.
