Biography

Dr. Joanne Smith BVSc is an equine veterinarian, embryologist, and research candidate at the University of Queensland, specialising in advanced assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in the horse. Her work uniquely integrates clinical practice with research, with a primary focus on optimising equine intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes through improved oocyte maturation and embryo culture. Her current research investigates the role of key cytokines, FGF2, LIF, and IGF1, in enhancing oocyte developmental competence and embryo production, with particular emphasis on age-dependent responses in mares. This work contributes to the advancement of equine in vitro embryo production and offers valuable translational insights for human reproductive medicine. In parallel with her academic work, Joanne is the founder and principal veterinarian of Weatherford Equine, where she delivers specialised reproductive services to high-value performance horse clients across Australia. Joanne is passionate about innovation, education, and animal welfare. Her vision is to deliver world-class equine ICSI technology to Australian breeders, integrating cutting-edge research with clinical excellence to achieve superior reproductive outcomes.
