Medical nursing of bloat in rabbits
Abstract
Gastrointestinal obstruction, colloquially referred to as 'bloat,' constitutes a critical medical emergency in pet rabbits. While numerous factors can trigger bloat in these animals, trichobezoars, stand out as the predominant cause. Traditionally, the approach to this condition has been surgical intervention. However, our clinical experience has revealed an effective medical management strategy, complemented by diligent and comprehensive nursing care, often yields favorable outcomes. This alternative approach minimizes the need for invasive and high-risk surgery in severely decompensated rabbits.
In this presentation, I aim to revolutionise the approach to gastrointestinal obstructions in rabbits and I discuss the details of managing rabbits presenting with gastrointestinal obstruction.Looking at the crucial signs that indicate this condition, the requisite nursing equipment, specific medications employed, and optimal fluid administration rates integral to successful medical management. Additionally, I will run through the placement of an orogastric tube to alliviate the pressure build up.
