Workshop Six: Hands free X-ray - radiography positioning workshop

Abstract

Hands free imaging is considered the gold standard for animal radiography. Despite this, it is still not uncommon to see patients being held for X-ray in clinics all over Australia. Hands free radiography is a skill that like any other requires practice. In this workshop we will develop the necessary skills to position for a variety of x-rays including common views such as abdomens and complicated surgical views. We will discuss;
• Positioning for routine views
• Choosing positioning aids
• Patient variations to consider
• How to adjust for difficult anatomy
• Alternate approaches such as horizontal beam and when it’s appropriate
• Low stress handling and it’s place in the Xray suite

Veterinary Imaging is a growing field with equipment and technology improving all the time. It is essential that as Nurses and Techs we keep up with these developments and aim to provide high quality diagnostic imaging in all clinics. Presented by a Diagnostic Radiographer with a bachelor’s degree in medical imaging and Australia’s only Diagnostic Imaging VTS RVT, this workshop will bring you tried and tested tips and tricks. By taking top quality images the first time every time, we can reduce the need for repeated procedures on referred patients and can get patients necessary treatments faster. Quality images will contribute to improved patient outcomes and client satisfaction. The skills developed in this workshop will be applicable to fast paced ECC settings, busy GP clinics and Surgical and Medical specialists alike. It is suitable for nurses of all skill levels who are exposed to imaging procedures in practice.
