Initial assessment of the emergency patient

Abstract

Rapid and accurate assessment of the emergency patient has the potential to lead to good patient outcomes. This lecture will review the general principles of assessment in the emergency patient.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this presentation the attendee will be knowledgeable in:
• a sequential approach to the assessment of the emergency patient
• localization of breathing problems
• the use of 5 perfusion parameters
• common clinical findings in the poorly perfused patient
• ancillary assessment tools

Biography

Harold Davis is a veterinary practice educational consultant and the former Manager of the Emergency and Critical Care Service at the UC Davis William R Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Harold has been in the profession for 47 years. As co-founder of the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians, Harold was instrumental in obtaining from North American Veterinary Technicians Association provisional recognition for technicians as specialist. This is the first organization to receive this acceptance. He is also a charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia. He is the past president of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Harold is the first non-veterinarian elected to this position of this 5000 plus member organization. He currently serves as immediate past President on the Board of Directors for the North American Veterinary Community. In addition, he is a Treasurer of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. Harold is the recipient of many awards and honors; most recently the 2020 Continuing Educator of the Year Award - Veterinary Technician at the Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas Nevada, USA. He is an international speaker haven spoken in 15 countries. In addition, he has published several book chapters, journal articles and the second edition of his co-edited book entitled Advanced Monitoring and Procedures for Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care.
