Getting the best from one-on-one meetings at work

Abstract

Having a staff meeting with your employer or employee can be an uncomfortable experience. But, what if the meeting is a scheduled 1on1 (just the two of you), that you have on a frequent basis? These meetings, if held with good intent from both parties, can be a game changer in how a team functions under a leader and how an individual establishes their place in the team.

Research has demonstrated that most people don’t just like 1on1’s, they love them. Studies also note that our senior staff are more inclined to want a regular 1on1 with their manager, than our younger generations. This is interesting as we understand through the mass of information that is available to us that our younger generations seek feedback in a more determined way.

Here we discuss how to get the best from these meetings. We talk about employee engagement, short term and long term goals, avoiding micromanaging and return on investment.
