Biography
Prof. Dr. Denis Verwilghen, DVM, MSc, PhD, DES, Dipl. ECVS, Dipl. EVDC (Eq), is an internationally renowned equine surgeon and specialist in equine dentistry. He currently serves as the Clinical Director and Senior Surgeon at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Victoria, Australia, and is also a Professorial Fellow at the Melbourne School of Veterinary Sciences. Dr. Verwilghen has held prominent academic and clinical positions, including Associate Professor in Equine Surgery at the University of Sydney and University of Copenhagen and senior clinical roles across Europe and Australia.
With over 20 years of experience in large animal surgery and equine dentistry, Dr. Verwilghen’s expertise extends to advanced surgical techniques, head disorders, infection control, and basic surgical principles. He is a Diplomate of both the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European Veterinary Dental College, making him a dual specialist in his field. Dr. Verwilghen is also deeply involved in veterinary education, regularly presenting at international conferences and contributing to the development of innovative surgical practices. Dr Verwilghen is a strong believer in fundamental surgical practices that are applicable to any species and has been a driving force behind the veterinary hand hygiene initiative.
