Understanding and managing pet parrot behaviour: Challenges and solutions
Abstract
Parrots, with their intelligence and vibrant personalities, are beloved companions to many. However, their complex behaviours can pose significant challenges for both pet owners and veterinary professionals. This talk delves into the intricate world of pet parrot behaviour, exploring common issues such as vocalisation, aggression, feather plucking, and social interaction needs. We will discuss practical strategies for managing these behaviours, emphasising positive reinforcement, environmental enrichment, and consistent routines. Additionally, we will address the critical role of veterinary nurses in identifying and mitigating behaviour-related health problems, such as stress-induced illnesses and nutritional deficiencies. Through case studies and expert insights, attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the behavioural dynamics of pet parrots and learn effective techniques to foster a harmonious relationship between these captivating birds and their owners.
