Tiny miracles: Nursing neonates

Abstract

Neonatal morbidity rates are notably high, with the highest incidence of mortality occurring within the first week of life. Various factors contribute to these early deaths, including maternal health, congenital defects, infections, and dystocia. However, timely and effective intervention by Veterinary Nurses and Technicians, as well as the veterinary team can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the risk of losing neonates. This presentation is designed to equip Veterinary Nurses/Technicians with the latest recommendations and best practices for the resuscitation and nursing care of neonatal puppies and kittens. It will provide a comprehensive understanding of the unique health complications in neonates and the specialised approaches required to address them effectively, distinct from other life stages. By enhancing their skills and knowledge, Veterinary Nurses and Technicians can play a crucial role in improving outcomes for these vulnerable patients.
