Workshop Three: Turning the 'nurse dental check' into a nurse-led dental care program

Abstract

Veterinary Nurses play a pivotal role in the care of the dental patient and education of the client, and a well-trained, motivated nurse can successfully implement a dental care program that takes a proactive approach to the management of periodontal disease improving the quality of life of so many patients. This workshop's aim is to take the Nurse Dental Check and turn it into a structured Nurse Dental Consultation to assist attendees to implement a nurse-led Dental Clinic into their practice.

Attendees will be presented with the pathophysiology of Periodontal Disease, the anatomical structures affected and a simple 8-step approach to the oral examination of the conscious patient. They will learn strategies in presenting to clients the importance of homecare in the prevention / management of Periodontal Disease, presenting estimates of fees in relation to procedures and the significance of early intervention. Attendees will build practical skills in structuring their consultation, learn strategies in communication and building rapport with clients, as well as creating tools to help educate their clients, create a workable Patient History Template, confidently refer clients for a veterinary consultation when outside the nurse's scope and take their motivation to a more proactive approach to dental care for the 12 Dental Months each year.
