Parasitology basics: Managing round worms in small ruminants on lifestyle blocks
Abstract
Managing gastrointestinal parasites in ruminants has been a longstanding struggle for commercial farming systems but now more than ever is affecting lifestyle properties at a greater intensity due to their high stocking densities, small areas of grazable land and an internet full of misinformation.
High worm burdens do not equal a drench deficiency. Managing worm burdens is about building strong relationships with clients and using our understanding of the roundworm life-cycle to manipulate various environmental factors to prevent infection in the first place.
This presentation delves into the life-cycles of roundworms and coccidia, and how to manipulate this life-cycle through grazing management to reduce worm burdens without relying on anthelmintic medication. We also look at building client relationships and the role educating clients plays in compliance and parasite management as a whole.
