Shock: An overview

Abstract

Many critically ill patients suffer a disease process associated with inadequate tissue perfusion, resulting in poor oxygen delivery. The condition is often assessed as shock. Shock is defined as inadequate cellular energy production. Shock most commonly occurs secondary to poor tissue perfusion from low or unevenly distributed blood flow that causes a critical decrease in oxygen delivery in relation to oxygen consumption.1Shock has been typically classified into several categories (e.g., cardiogenic, septic, hypovolemic), and the causes of shock are numerous. Regardless of the form of shock, the goal is to optimize oxygen delivery. This discussion provides an overview of the determinants of oxygen delivery and a review of the pathophysiology, assessment, and the management of shock
